#1 "Life is Above" by Ahmed Al-Arefi

This is a model of our life on earth in relation to the cosmic mysteries. The absolute truth of existence of time, of space, and life.

#2 "Palmtree Seascape" by Anonymous

I really live tropical scenes, which inspired this piece. The simplicity of a palm tree on a beach next to an ocean under the sun is what island live should be about.

#3 "Flowers" by Anonymous

I enjoy art that incorporates glass and mirrors so to be able to use that medium with a nature theme was such a thrill.

#4 "Mirror Squared" by Anonymous

Taking everyday stuff and creating art out of it and incorporating earth tones.

#5 "Rasta Journey" by Ferdinand Baly

Ferdinand is a native of St. Thomas. He has created his own hand-drawn technique for etching glass. This piece includes the images from his cultural history.

#6 "Mobile in Profile" by Lynn Berry

I have been interested in kinetic art for many years and so it seemed natural to use the mirrors to construct this mobile.

#7 "The Caged Bird Sings of Freedom" by Lynn Berry

I was inspired to do this piece by a painting I saw of a woman holding a birdcage made out of twigs. The title was inspired by a poem by Maya Angelou entitled "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"

#7a "The Caged Bird Sings of Freedom" by Lynn Berry

I was inspired to do this piece by a painting I saw of a woman holding a birdcage made out of twigs. The title was inspired by a poem by Maya Angelou entitled "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings"

#8 "Crystal Magic" by Melissa Berry – Student Entry

The students also did watercolor paintings of the decorated box.

#9 "Alice Outside the Looking Glass – Looking In" by Richard Berry

I took inspiration from the first published edition of "Through the Looking Glass" illustrated by Teniel.

#10 "Reflecting the Caribbean" by Toni Craft

Always inspired by the Caribbean beaches!

#11 "When I Look in the Mirror I See My Ideas" by Eranah Davies

What can I say… Fun!

#12 "Blue Water Sailing" by Alison Davis

Mixed glass, ceramic, and fabric.

#13 "Blue Moon" by Alison Davis

Mixed media – recycled fabric, glass tiles, egg box and mirrors!

#14 "Evolution" by Alison Davis

A Great Adventure! What begins as an idea often ends as something totally different to how it was first imagined. I seem to be taken into another realm and the final creation is usually a surprise.

#15 "Home-Sweet-Home" by Emory Cortese

Inspired by the warmth and encouragement of my "Tillett Family", I am an emerging artist. Assembling materials at hand, I was taken by the "glass bubbles." The piece grew naturally around them. Home-Sweet-Home.

#16 "Soma Mirror" by Julia Gardner

This piece was made from leftover bamboo I had from remodeling my condo, scrap glass from Mango Tango and acrylic paint.

#17 "Bird Nest" by Helen Green

This piece features one of my signature bird nest watercolors on the front. Cute sitting on a dresser or in a purse.

#18 "Island Fairy" by Mishela Henderson – Student Entry

I am 8 years old and this is my second year in the Arts Alive auction. My father taught me to etch my design of my fairy.

#18a "Island Fairy" by Mishela Henderson – Student Entry

I am 8 years old and this is my second year in the Arts Alive auction. My father taught me to etch my design of my fairy.

#19 "Flowers in the Mirror" by Elizabeth Hesser

Reflections of my hibiscus pieces.

#20 "Reflection of a Lost Culture" by Elizabeth Hesser

This piece reflects my love of masks and my sorrow for lost cultures.

#21 "Reflections3" by Gordon Hesser

This piece is a combination of mirrors and math. The word cubed is represented by the 3. The body of the piece is structured without the use of a supporting box.

#22 "Courtship at the Taj" by Augustin Holder

This piece of art came from my travels to North Africa and of my Indian background. As you know, elephants are very "regal" in the Eastern culture and they represent intellect and courage. I used a jade elephant that represents the female elephant and the silver to represent the male and as you see, the glass is to symbolize the Gem of the Taj and Love.

#23 "Mer-Mirror" by Jai Kenyatta Anderson

Jai, a long time resident of the Virgin Islands and a supporter of Arts Alive, has recently returned "home". Jai has been a painter and craftsman all her adult life using her love of the islands and the diversity of cultures a motivation for her creations.

#24 "Mirror Necklace" by Barbara Krueger

My mirror necklace is made with hammered copper, swarovski crystals, and mirrors. All elements are light catching and designed to draw attention to the piece. I am interested in the reaction of the viewer – is attention captured more by the piece itself of by one's own reflection?

#25 "Alpha and Omega" by Kushiba

This is a portrait of the Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen of Ethiopia in their coronation robes in 1930.

#26 "Knife Tip Future" by Clay Lindol-Jones

The positive and negative spaceships flies side by side futuristically into the future.

#27 "Copper & Mirror" by Larry Lipsky

The idea of Tillett and taking an old mirror and doing something with it is what inspired this piece.

#28 "Absurdity" by Leslie Livacz and David Livacz

This occasional table evokes a sultry flair with smoked-glass mirror and a deep teal-colored finish. Reflective of 1940s elegance, the table was designed using a cartoon from that era which further accentuates the piece. A collaborative effort, this piece is sophisticated as well as functional

#29 "On Deck" by Madeleine Meehan

We are mirroring the best, most beautiful sailing waters in the Caribbean. How blessed we are to reflect it, be part of it, LOVE IT!

#30 "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...?" by Monique Purguy

Looking at most things, I always want to restyle them and make it one of a kind. To each in turn – to paint, scissors, knitting needle and in this case crochet and fancy yarn.

#31 "Holiday Cheer" by Monique Purguy

It's hard for me to stop when I have ideas. This is my third version of a mirror, enjoy it or get it for a friend.

#32 "Shamrock and Coins" by Monique Purguy

I had in mind green and red for Christmas, and then I realized that the auction was scheduled for January. So I pitched the red… looked for the gold and we each celebrate Ireland.

#33 "Auto-Portraits" by Monique Purguy

Some years back as I was moving a mirror, I caught myself in another one. I thought the idea was interesting enough to make a drawing of. A few weeks ago I got hold of my scissors and started a very lengthy project of decoupage to make this piece.

#34 "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder" by Brenda Silvia

Brenda Sylvia is a landscape painter who lives and works on St. Thomas and St. John. She paints entirely on location in oils, acrylics, and watercolors. The act of painting outside and experiencing nature firsthand is an integral part of her work. She finds the dynamic beauty of the Virgin Islands wonderfully inspirational.

#35 "Christmas" by Denise Smith

The Christmas Season gave me the idea for this piece.

#36 "A Honeymoon" by Denise Smith

This piece of abstract arts and craft was well thought out and I had fun creating this work.

#37 "Reflectology" by Lisa Stichler Parfitt

Recycled mirrors are hand cut and placed with special mirror adhesive. Finished with sanded grout and sealed with silicone. Edges are cut glass and very sharp. Please use extreme caution when handling.

#38 "Trapped in a Mirror" by Khadiyah Weeks – Student Entry

It's about a princess both blessed and cursed with skin made of the worlds finest material trapped in glass to preserve her beauty.

#39 "Sea Glass and Pearls" by Frances Wildgen

Mirror, sea glass, pearls, and a ribbon to hang.

#40 "Meow Me Son" by Kim Young

This mirror is in remembrance of Mila – a kitty that is gone from my life forever. You will be missed.

Virgin Islands artists are invited to create beautiful works of art from a non-traditional medium -- Mirrors! Artists will be given a mirror to create a work of art, be it abstract, portrait, landscape, mixed media, collage, 3-D, or any other medium you wish.

The mirrors will then be auctioned (both silent and live auctions) at Tillett Gardens on January 9, 2010. The fundraising event will be held in conjunction with a cocktail reception and concert featuring Berklee Collage of Music graduate Kmisha-Victoria Courts, winner of the 2005 Miss World Talent Competition as Miss American Virgin Islands. Participating artists will retain 30% of the sale of their work with Tillett Foundation retaining the other 70%. Artist’s may also choose to donate all proceeds from the sale of their mirror to the Foundation.
